Jersey Patio

I had never been to New York City. Or New Jersey. Or this railroad station. But somehow God knew exactly what we’d need that particular night. Let me paint it out for you.My friend and I had taken the Greyhound bus across Canada, explored our nation’s capital as well as Montreal, and then five glorious non-stop days in New York City. After racing for our very lives (with prayers under-breath) nightly as we sped back to our Harlem hostel from the tube … we were finally on a safe and quiet train out to New Jersey to visit my friend’s pal. It was only a 45 minute train ride but it was dark. Unfamiliar. And we were both packin’. Suitcases that is. A rather large gentleman took pity on us and helped us off the train and up the street before he bid us adieu as he was on his way to his mothers. He warned us of “certain” areas to steer clear of in town. Gangs. Trouble. Gee thanks

Pam and I looked at eachother. Now what? We had an address, but little good that does you when you’re in a foreign town.

Then, like out of a fog or film, appeared Morgan Freeman. Yes, that’s right. Or at least I had to double-take to ensure he wasn’t the actor himself. I honestly don’t know where he came from, but when we told him where we were headed, he took our bags and led the way. A teacher he was. He chatted amiably and before we knew it we were on the Jersey doorstep of our intended stop. Again, we bid adieu. And on we carried with our adventure.

As I have remembered that night many times I’ve been dumbfounded at the “assistance” that came our way. I was certain “Mr. Freeman” was an angel because he totally came at the right time and what seemed from out of nowhere! He lightened our load and led us to the place we knew we had to get to, we just didn’t know how.

Isn’t that a question we often ask ourselves? I know where I want to go, I just don’t know HOW! I know I have.

Perhaps you’ve had your own such night. Maybe a “knight in shining overalls” came to fix your tire on the side of the road. Or a cheque came in the mail, unexpected, but at the perfect time. You were certain you were going in the right direction, just all the pieces hadn’t quite come together yet.

Luke 21:14-15 Jesus was warning His disciples of possible troubles and the last days. Yet He reminded them: “Resolve and settle it in your minds not to meditate and prepare beforehand how you are to make your defense and how you will answer. For I (Myself) will give you a mouth and such utterance and wisdom that all of your foes combined will be unable to stand against or refute.”

This isn’t a “one-time” word God has given us either. I don’t think. How many times does He say “Don’t worry…” or “Don’t be afraid” and He always follows it with an “I will…” God wants us to trust Him so that He can perform on our behalf. Not to waste endless minutes or hours ahead of time trying to figure it out. He said He’d give us a mouth and wisdom to chase off all our foes!

God knows the end destination on your map – even if you’re not certain of the “how” at this point. He sees you on a train station platform looking for help, wondering which way to go, and is about to send you a “Mr. Freeman” to help your journey. You just keep putting one foot in front of the other, and before you know it, you’ll be on a Jersey patio making memories.
